21 Audrey Durambey

To design a bowl in the Staffordshire style
Was a project I thought might be worth while.
I’m a practical person and like things to do
And this was something completely new.

I thought, and I sketched and sketched and thought,
But all of my efforts alas came to naught.
Until one day I found in a book
Some patterns of which I liked the look.

So I went to work and at last achieved
A design with which I was really quite pleased.
This was duly approved with slight alteration,
And colours selected with modification.

I then had to wait until came the day
All the bowls were complete and put on display.
One hundred and one each of different design,
I felt very proud that one was mine.

The display being over, the next part of the deal
Was to invite three people around for a meal,
During which the bowls must be used in some way
Then given to the guests to remember the day.

Now I have three friends I like to see
Who often come round to play cards with me.
So I asked them round for a special treat
Soup from my bowls, a sandwich and sweet.

The bowls with their pattern of dark pink and green
Were much admired when first they were seen
But full of soup from bottom to top
All was not seen until the very last drop.

My friends liked their bowls and took them away
Just how they will use them I cannot say
But mine proudly stands in my living room
A fine container for a pot plant in bloom.
