My big problem for the meal was that I’d told too many people about it and had to be quite ruthless in who to invite. I couldn’t manage only three people and decided to stretch the rule a bit to three households. In the spirit of spreading the Potteries love, I thought that wasn’t too much of a transgression! This meant that each bowl was going to a separate home.

I decided to use the bowls for serving various parts of the meal. I went with a Mexican theme but with the added Potteries twist of using Staffordshire oatcakes instead of wraps. I made salsa, chilli, and added rice, salad, chips, cheese, soured cream etc. and people got to build their own meals as they liked. The oatcakes went down really well and worked with the other ingredients. Although we often have meals at each others’ houses, this was the first I’d done for a while, so it was really good in getting me organised and actually going ahead with such a social occasion, especially as one couple have a small toddler and meeting up can get harder to arrange. (Magically, she slept through the whole thing!). Everyone loved their bowls and gleefully took them carefully away, promising to use them for cereal and everyday use, but then later telling me they were a bit worried about doing that once they got home. I was very happy to give them away, partly because they are very special friends. I think some time in the future the bowls could be reunited…
